Learn How to Make Beautiful Climate-Adapted Containers

Saturday, May 17th, 12 PM to 1:30 PM

Join Bob Hyland, Portland-based garden designer and president of Leach Garden Friends, to learn about a range of container styles and planting combinations suited to our changing climate, summer-dry period, and wild weather extremes. Bob skillfully uses native &  Mediterranean climate shrubs like Arctostaphylos, Ceanothus , Mahonia , and Yucca, as building blocks in his container designs. Well-composed pots offer 4-season interest of foliage, bark, flowers, and fragrance and reduce irrigation needs during dry summer months. You will go home with criteria for choosing outdoor pots for their situations, best potting soil mixes, planting design formulas, best practices on planting, fertilizing, and watering.

Bob Hyland is owner and principal of @hylandgardendesign.com. Bob is a former director and vice president of Hardy Plant Society of Oregon (HPSO) and has served on the boards of Pacific Horticulture and the American Public Gardens Association (APGA). Bob’s pottery donations and container designs grace the upper garden entrance and Manor House at Leach, as well as restaurants, bakeries, and private residences in the Portland metro area.
