Ornamental Shrub Pruning

Explore deciduous and evergreen shrubs with Francheska Snyder

Wednesday, April 16th, 10 AM to 11:30 AM

We will begin with a walk and talk to gauge what plant varieties are of interest to the group for examination.  Plant variety, health, physical location and conditions, as well as placement and purpose, all contribute to appropriate pruning maintenance protocols.  These topics will be discussed along with a pruning demonstration for each shrub that we investigate.

This workshop will be held in the upper garden area.  Participants should dress for the weather as this workshop will be held entirely outdoors.  No tools will be needed, but feel free to bring materials for note taking.

Francheska Snyder owns Niwa Method, a landscape business specializing in Japanese gardens and focusing on tree and shrub pruning around the Portland area.  She leans towards a naturalistic style of pruning that honors the natural structure of the plant material that she prunes.  Francheska has previously worked in public non-profit gardens such as Portland Japanese Garden, and Shofuso Japanese House and Garden in Philadelphia.  She has been studying the craft of Japanese gardens for over a decade with teachers across the United States and Japan.  Francheska supports her garden craft by also studying ikebana--a form of Japanese flower arranging--with the Ohara School of Ikebana.
