Youth Programs

Programs For Youth

We provide nature experiences for children visiting the Garden with programs geared towards preschool through high school ages. Our children’s educational program provides hands-on learning opportunities through participatory activities, summer day camp or individual art classes. Currently we offer the following educational opportunities:

  • Honeybee Hike
  • Art Classes
  • Summer Day Camp
  • Children’s Nature Fair will begin again in 2021

Please see our calendar for all current children’s education classes being offered or sign-up for email updates.

Honeybee Hike

Every Wednesday, 10:00—11:00am (March through November) for children ages 2-5 years, $3.00 per child. Leaders take small groups along garden trails encouraging children to smell flowers, touch leaves, look for insects, and to investigate nature through their senses. They also make a craft project and listen to a story. We can do special Honeybee Hikes by request, subject to availability.

Reservations required for groups of 10+ children and adults. Please submit a completed Reservation Form – located below.

Summer Day Camp

Each summer, Leach Botanical Garden is filled with the sounds of summer day campers laughing and exploring.

In 2020, kids aged 8-10 will hoot like an owl, jump like a frog, run like a deer, and see like a bat as they explore the world of animals in an immersive 5-day Outdoor Theater Camp. Students will build their performance skills while creating original songs, scenes, costumes and poetry inspired by Pacific Northwest wildlife. Register here

Youth aged 14-18 can join our 5-day Immersive Outdoor Performance Lab where writers, performers and artists of all types will thrive in a hands-on experience. Students will create their own performance piece, set along the paths and trails at Leach Botanical Garden. Register here

Instructor Joellen Sweeney is a theatre-maker, teaching artist and outdoor enthusiast. Her theatre company, Bedrock Theatre, creates immersive adaptions of fairytales, myths and legends, performing them in motion along paths and trails. Joellen is passionate about developing students’ unique voices and building their confidence. She has taught for Northwest Children’s Theatre, Portland Center Stage and Young Musicians & Artists Camp.
