Moss & Lichen Walk

September 13th, 10 AM to 12 PM

Explore the exciting world of lichens and moss, with ecology enthusiast Ruth Williams. Ruth will cover the basics of lifecycle, ecological niche, and acquaint you with five common lichen and moss species found in our community forest.
Ruth Williams has degrees in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture from UC Davis. She works as a local consulting arborist, helping preserve trees for future generations. She teaches and guides interpretive hikes on a wide variety of ecological subjects.

This event is included with regular garden admission (free for members). A suggested donation of $5-10 per person helps support the garden.

The tour runs rain or shine, and is a less than 1 mile walk on paved, relatively flat terrain. Appropriate for all ages. Two ISA CEUs available.

Botanical Boo! Bash

October 27th, 2 PM to 5 PM

Join us for an enchanting afternoon as the Garden transforms into a magical realm filled with tricks and treats! Costumes are highly encouraged for all ages. Don’t miss out on this magical Halloween celebration!Enjoy trick or treating, a scavenger hunt, live music from Jessa & the Saplings, the Belmont Goats in their Halloween best, crafts, snacks and a Book Giveaway courtesy of SMART (Start Making A Reader Today).

Grandparents Day Open House

September 8th
10 AM to 2 PM

Bring grandma & grandpa to the garden and enjoy complimentary tea & lemonade, and a card making craft for the kiddos.

Grandparents will receive a mini rose (while supplies last) and much adoration from the grand kids.

This event is free with garden admission.

Honeybee Hikes

Wednesdays June 5th - October, 2024.
10 AM to 11:30 AM

Come explore Leach Botanical Garden at the gentle pace of a toddler! Our nature education staff will lead groups of 2-5 year olds and their grown-ups on slow, curiosity-driven activities designed to engage young minds and incorporate their caregivers. Register soon; we expect capacity to fill quickly! Participating adults, don't forget to sign up!

Maximum two (2) children per adult. Adults must attend the activity. Please ask about our Garden for All program if admission cost is a barrier for entry.

Walk with an Arborist

September 14
10 AM to 11:30 AM

What are arborists looking at when they look at trees?  Nicky Dunbar, certified arborist and owner of Foster Trees, LLC will lead an exploration to share an her perspective of tree structure and health.  She will address some basics of tree biomechanics, what arborists are looking for when they make pruning or tree maintenance decisions, and how that can translate to caring for trees in your own landscape. 

About your guide:A former environmental educator and licensed mechanical engineer, Nicky believes in the value of urban forests for both human and ecological health and is committed to caring for trees to support people and wildlife. Nicky is working to certify Foster Trees, LLC as a benefit corporation to showcase the company's commitment to people and planet.

ASL Tour for the Deaf Community

September 28th
10 AM to 12 PM

Join Max Meyers, program coordinator at Leach Botanical Garden, and Sara Volk from Johnson Creek Watershed Council for a guided garden tour in American Sign Language (ASL). See our amazing botanical collection, learn about the Garden’s history, and experience the wonder of Portland’s special ecosystems. This tour is open to anyone who knows ASL, especially Deaf visitors and their families. Registration required! The tour is free with garden admission.

The tour route is not wheelchair accessible and will be led on uneven paths and slopes, on a mix of gravel, steps, and pavement. The tour will be in ASL only; no English interpretation will be available. Max is a CODA who grew up in Eugene, Oregon, with a mix of ASL, PSE, and English. 

Summer’s End Honeybee Seed Party

October 16th
10 Am to 1 PM

Come reunite with your friends from the summer Honeybee Hikes and help prepare our children’s garden for next year! We will have hands-on seeding and gardening activities appropriate for both little hands and big hands. Stop by anytime between 10am and 1pm to say hi to friends, meet some new people, and participate in improving our children’s garden space. Free with Garden Admission.
