School Programs

School Programs

At Leach Botanical Garden, we aspire to be a hands-on laboratory for environmental education that provides teachers and students with field trip options that are unique to the Garden. Please be aware that the maximum number of students in the Garden at any one time is 30.

Currently we offer the following educational opportunities:

  • Guided Field Trips – Preschool through 5th grade
  • Self-Guided Field Trips
  • Honeybee Hikes
  • Community Service Projects
  • Summer College Internships

Summer College Internship

The college internship program is designed to offer hands-on experiences for people aspiring to a career in horticulture, public gardening, and landscape design. The intern will work alongside horticultural staff and volunteers doing weeding, planting, watering, mulching, pruning, visitor interaction, plant labeling, inventory and collections record keeping, and public education. Staff and intern will identify a specific project to work on that suits both the Garden and intern. Educational field trips and public educational programs are offered to help broaden the student’s horticultural horizons.

College internships are typically offered during summer months. Look for the 2021 Internship Notice and Application Form to be posted in early spring 2021.

Guided Field Trips

Leach Botanical Garden is a wonderful place to learn about plants, animals and unique ecosystems. Guided field trips are often organized and led by our partner, Portland Parks & Recreation’s Environmental Education program. Visit their webpage to see cost, dates and other information on scheduling a field trip: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/parks/62975

Contact their office directly for additional information: 503-823-3601

Self-Guided Field Trips

If you have a specific curriculum and do not need a Leach Garden educator, come explore the Garden on your own. To help you plan your trip, a trail map and bird guide can be downloaded on the right.

Self-guided school groups must pre-register but your visit is free. Please review the Educational Program Guidelines and submit a Registration Form at least three weeks before your visit – both documents are available below. We will make every effort to accommodate your requested date.

Honeybee Hike

A Honeybee Hike is a fun opportunity for preschool students to explore the Garden. Hike leaders take small groups along garden trails encouraging children to smell flowers, touch leaves, look for insects, or investigate nature through their senses. They also make a craft project, listen to a story.

2020 Honey Bee Hike are every Wednesday 10:00—11:00 am. from March through November.

Meets in front of the Manor House. $3.00 per 2-5 year old child. No preregistration required.

To request a weekday Honeybee Hike for your group of 10+ children and adults, outside of the regularly scheduled Wednesday hike, please complete and submit a Reservation Form at least three weeks in advance of your requested date.

Children’s Nature Fair will return in 2021 after the completion of the Upper Garden Development Project. Nature Fair is held in mid-May. Please check our calendar or sign-up for e-mail updates for more information about this event.

Community Service Projects

Community Service Projects are intended to provide an enriching learning experience with meaningful community service that benefits participants and the Garden alike. Projects are specific to the season and the groups’ interest and age. Past projects have included creating garden beds, restoring benches, caring for garden amenities and removing invasive plant species. Leach Garden staff accompanies all service work but adult chaperones must also work with students and provide management to ensure a successful project.

Any group larger than 10 must contact our admissions staff at least 5 days in advance. We are assessing reservations on a case by case basis. Please email info@leachgarden.org or call 503-208-6030. You may be turned away if you don't contact us beforehand.

Registration

Advance registration is required for all workshops, classes and events here at the garden. Many activities have limited seating/attendance and are first come, first serve.

ADMISSION

Admission during regular Garden hours is waived  until spring 2022 during this introductory period in celebration of the Upper Garden development project.

Garden capacity is currently limited due to parking and state guidelines. To ensure that you are able to visit at the time you wish, click here to reserve your free timed entry ticket below.

All guests must check in at our admissions booth upon arrival. Timed tickets are for time entry only; once here, feel free to enjoy the garden at your leisure.

If you arrive prior to or after your ticket entry time, you will be able to enter the Garden as capacity permits.

Donations are appreciated. Contributions support the operation of the Garden and our ability to offer programs and education.

Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and feel free to bring a water bottle.

COVID-19 SAFETY

  • In accordance with Oregon State guidelines face masks are required in the garden (indoor and outdoor) regardless of vaccination status, effective Friday 8/27/2021. Please maintain (6ft) social distance between parties during your visit.

If you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed in the past 14 days, please postpone your visit to the garden.
