Volunteering at Leach Botanical Garden

Our Volunteers

What would we do without our volunteers? Currently, over 100 volunteers keep Leach Garden humming. They welcome visitors to the Manor House, provide tours of the garden and share stories and information with our guests. They propagate plants, groom trails and prune branches. They stage events and fundraisers and lend their seemingly limitless talents to help us with a number of special projects. They say a beautiful garden is a work of heart, and our volunteers are here to prove it.

Volunteer Opportunities

 Receptionist

FritzPhoto-LeachBotanicalGarden-054.jpgAre you a people person? This may be the opportunity for you. Our receptionists are stationed inside the beautiful Manor House, which is located in the heart of the Garden. As a receptionist, you will greet our visitors, give tours of the Manor House and share the story of the Garden’s founders, John and Lilla Leach.

 Gift Shop Clerk

FritzPhoto-LeachBotanicalGarden-093.jpgExplore this fun retail opportunity and join our Gift Shop team! Gift Shop volunteers serve customers in the Gift Shop and provide information about the Garden. The Gift Shop generates significant revenue to support the Garden’s operations and features a wide range of locally-sourced items.

 Education Volunteer

DSC_0371.JPGLove working with children? Consider joining our team of education volunteers. These volunteers work with children in a number of fun and rewarding ways. Whether it be leading our weekly Honeybee Hikes, assisting with after school activities or tending to the Children’s Garden, these volunteers are essential to the success of our youth programs.

 Tour Guides

Volunteers - Tour.jpgSpend time in the great outdoors educating our visitors about the garden’s history, collection information and various garden habitats. You don’t need to be a plant expert to lead our garden tours, as we will provide training. Guides are needed for our Saturday Weekend Walks and occasionally throughout the week.

Want to volunteer but can’t commit to a regular schedule? Ask about volunteering at our special events! Leach Botanical Garden is host to several fun events throughout the year including the Spring Plant Sale, Nature Fair, English Teas, and the Holiday Bazaar. Volunteers are the driving force behind our special events. Without you, these events wouldn’t be possible. Ask how you can get involved today!

Becoming a Volunteer

Getting Started

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Annie Winn, Volunteer Coordinator at (503)-760-0705, or via e-mail at awinn(at)leachgarden.org

Prospective volunteers will fill out an application to indicate their interests, availability and experience. We will try our best to match our current volunteer opportunities with your experience and preferences. In addition, if you would like to offer any volunteer services not listed on this webpage, we would love to hear from you!

All volunteers must go through Portland Parks & Recreation’s screening process and background check. We ask that volunteers be able to make a 6 month commitment, unless working on special events.
