2017 Lecture Series September

Traveling is the theme for this year's lecture series. Plants and soil that originate in one place can often be found a continent away. This series explores some of the ways they got there. All lectures will take place in the Manor House at the Garden.

Thank you to Portland Nursery for sponsoring this year's series.

Description: How is it that so many Pacific Northwest native plants are found along roadsides and in the gardens and woodlands of Europe? One man is primarily responsible: Scotsman David Douglas. For more than a decade, local historian Lois Leonard dedicated her time and effort to producing and directing this documentary on the life of David Douglas, the scientist credited with reforesting Scotland from seeds he collected in the Pacific Northwest. Her critically acclaimed film focuses on David Douglas's contributions to science—forestry, botany, and horticulture. During his career, Douglas introduced more than 200 new species to the gardens and forests of Europe. Following the screening of the hour-long film, Lois will field questions and talk more about the influence of David Douglas and other early plant explorers. Lois Leonard has worked in the field of public history and museums for more than twenty-five years. Her work includes the creation and management of nationally-recognized exhibitions, documentary videos and publications. Her films broadcast on Oregon Public Broadcasting and the History Channel.
