Ages: Ages 9-13. Maximum 20 campers.
In July Leach Botanical Garden will be transformed into a self-contained art studio for summer day campers ages 9-13. The Garden’s diversity of plant and animal species, various micro-climates and intriguing geologic clues to the past, lends it to a wide range of artistic inspiration.
While exploring all areas of the Garden, campers will fine-tune their observation and recording skills. Studying nature while exploring the Garden influences art projects such as drawing, sculpture, weaving and more! Of course there will also be plenty of time for games! On the final day of camp, family and friends will be treated to an art show!
About our Instructors:
Jane Nash received a BFA from Stratford College in Danville, Va. and attended graduate school in fine art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has consistently worked in the field of art her entire life, both teaching and painting. She is an art teacher and loves teaching both adults and children. She's taught for many years and has developed a way of teaching that promotes self-expression and freedom rather than a “correct” way to paint and draw. She is a partner in Fun with Tom and Jane, a business which goes into Assisted Living Facilities and provides arts and crafts projects for seniors. She teaches at Leach Botanical Garden, which gives artists of all ages an opportunity to experience the beauty of the Garden and the experience of being creative within it.
Thomas McCarley received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Georgia. He was an adjunct professor in the continuing education department of Trinity College in Washington, DC teaching classes in increasing student self-esteem and developing art programs for inner city schools without art instruction. Thomas also taught grantsmanship courses in the MBA program at Boston’s Lesley University. A recently relocated New Yorker, Thomas has partnered with Jane to run a company called Fun with Tom & Jane that brings arts & crafts projects to seniors in Memory Care facilities throughout Portland. This accomplished ceramicist’s thrown and carved pottery has been shown in New York art galleries, museums and national and international competitions.
